This is not related to a Mustang but it could be applied. I want to hear people's opinions on different trans cooler setups.

1. Stock trans cooler in radiator.

2. Bypass radiator trans cooler and run an external air cooled trans cooler.

3. Utilize the stock trans cooler and run an external trans cooler on the return side of the radiator trans cooler.

What do you guys think about these different setups?

Bypass factory cooler in radiator. I have seen a few stock setup cross contaminate. I also don't like one adding heat to coolant with the trans fluid. Just my thoughts.

Yeah the cross contamination from a ruptured cooler is a huge concern with the stock cooler. I also don't like the idea of adding the additional heat to the coolant from the trans. I'll probably bypass the stock cooler all together and go with an 8 pass aluminum external cooler. This is for a Truck I plan to use off road so the cooler I can keep trans temps the better.

I didn't know your car was auto. This is actually for my new tow vehicle/off-roader.

Nice.  Deep pan isn't an option for a 42RE in a WJ, lol.  But I did put in a cooler that was 2/3 the size of the condensor.  Man those trans temps stay low now.

A larger oil pan is not going to make anything better if you can't keep it cool.... reason I say because I know plenty of guys who upgraded their pan but forgot a good size cooler.... and the same thing happens vice versa..... best route to take first is a good external cooler and see how far the temps drop with that... And then take it from there
